Learning a new language doesn’t have to be difficult — sometimes all it takes is a spark of curiosity. At SHINE, we love turning everyday moments into learning moments. So today, here’s a quick and fun 2-minute Chinese lesson inspired by our recent trip to the Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium Conservation Centre!
Let’s learn five animal words in Chinese — easy to say, easy to remember, and perfect for practicing with your friends or family.
1. Elephant — dà xiàng (大象)
Pronunciation: daa-shyang
Fun tip: “大” means “big” — so the elephant is literally the “big image/figure” in Chinese.
2. Fox — hú lí (狐狸)
Pronunciation: hoo-lee
Fun tip: If someone is very clever in Chinese stories, they’re often compared to a fox!
3. Giraffe — cháng jǐng lù (长颈鹿)
Pronunciation: chang-jing-loo
Fun tip: It means “long-necked deer.” Simple and perfect.
4. Panda — xióng māo (熊猫)
Pronunciation: shyong-mao
Fun tip: The characters mean “bear” and “cat” — so pandas are “bear-cats” in Chinese!
5. Monkey — hóu zi (猴子)
Pronunciation: hoh-dzuh
Fun tip: Add “子 (zi)” to many nouns in Chinese — it makes it sound friendly or cute.
